Question:  What is a file system?

Answer:  This section describes the file system standards for CDs and DVDs. 1. ISO9660 If you wish to create a CD that will be used for non-Windows OSs (such as DOS, MAC, or UNIX), using ISO9660 is good idea. However, there are limitations to file and folder names that can be used with ISO9660. ISO9660 file and folder names can only be up to 8 characters and can only use capital letters and underscore "_". File name extension is also limited to a maximum of 3 alphanumeric characters. Folder hierarchies can consist of up to 8 levels. 2. JOLIET Joliet allows for filenames up to 64 characters long including spaces. A path and full path can be up to 64 characters and 120 characters, respectively. We recommend recording data in the Joliet format in the Windows system where long filenames are frequently used. Some characters are not allowed in Joliet file or folder names: * / : ; ? \ " < > | Please be aware that using text for a language other than that which is the Windows default language on the computer with Drag'n Drop CD+DVD installed leads to errors in writing the DISC. 3. UDF When using a DVD DISC as the write destination, the UDF format is automatically applied. The maximum number of characters for the UDF file system is originally 255. However, this application employs the bridge method where all the UDF, Joliet and ISO9660 file systems are written in order to maintain the reading compatibility in a lot of OS environments. Therefore, the number of characters is limited to 64 even when using DVD media with the UDF file system.
